How to make tassels

Tassels were all over my grandmother’s apartment. Today you can see them everywhere again. Whether key fobs, on cushions, on lamps or jewellery. Tassels are perfect for yarn recycling and enhance any knitted shawl. I will show you how to do this in this short tutorial.

Tutorial how to make tassels create donnarossa

Required material
yarn
cardboard or something firm (as wide as the tassels should belong)
scissors
tapestry needle

Step 1
Wrap yarn around the cardboard.

Tip: If you make several tassels for a project, you count how many times you have wrapped the cardboard. So all tassels get the same thickness.

Step 2
Secure the tassel with an approx. 20 cm long holding thread – in the video in the same colour as the edge of the shawl – by wrapping the thread around the wound threads and fastening it with the double knot.

Step 3
Cut the twisted threads of the tassel at the bottom.

Step 4
With a thread about 60 cm long you tie the tassel about 2 cm below the one with a double knot across. The tighter you put on the head of the tassel, the rounder it gets.

Now wrap one end of the thread around the tassel a few times. Make sure that the cross threads are nicely paralleled and the thread end is at least as long as the tassel. With the threaded thread end, you now stitch from above in the middle through the cross threads and from below out.

Repeat this step with the other end of the cross thread.

Step 5
Trim the ends of the tassel.

FINISHED! Now you have a tassel. And it didn’t even take five minutes.
