FO – Fightin’ Words

Gone are the mild temperatures. Something warming but not too wintry is needed. This fingerless gloves are ideal. The yardage is less than for a sock. So you can very well knit scraps of wool and ease your conscience by the reduced stash. And another advantage: it does not take long to knit mitts.

The pattern ‘Fightin’ Words’ is absolutely appropriate. Perfect to bust your stash. It is important to choose two colors that make enough contrast (see also my tips in this post). I had three different shades of blue left: navy, blue and turquoise. I have therefore the brightest combined with the darkest tone for the pattern and knit the cuff in blue.

figthin mitts - always ready

Pattern: Fightin’ Words by Annie Watts
Yarn: Fröhlich Wolle Special Blauband
Needles: 2.25mm for ribbing, 2.75mm for pattern

The designer proposes a tubular cast-on. This is a cast-on that is very stretchy and is perfect for a 1×1 ribbing. There are different ways to work the tubular cast-on, but I have taken TechKnittings. The only drawback is that it is better knit in rows, at least the foundation rows and then switching to knitting in the round. To cast-on already in the beginning in the round will be more difficult. So why spend time on that, when did you – can sew it together, right?

fightin mitts - total

The original mitts start right at the wrist. I wanted to have them a bit longer. I’ve knit a few extra rounds in the pattern before I started with the increases for the thumb.

As I like challenges I’ve knitted those mitts two at the same time with the magic loop method. For fair isle work, I can recommend wind up the yarn on some bobbins to avoid any mess with the different yarns.

The pattern is really fun. I could not wait to finally see the letters. So I progressed pretty quickly.
