Inspired by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, this MKAL offers the opportunity to play with knitting directions, patterns and colours.
Frida is another direction to knit a shawl, but in the end, you will have a unique and beautiful shawl!
The construction of Frida is perfect for people who don’t like to cast on a lot of stitches. Frida MKAL combines garter stitch with lace (hint: no brioche involved).
I use three colours in a fingering weight yarn combined with a Kidsilk lace weight.
Cowgirlblues Merino Twist (100% Superwash Merino; 150 m / 164 yards per 50 g)
• 1 ball in Cobalt (yarn A, YA)
50 g / 150 m / 164 yards used for the sample
• 1 ball in Black (yarn B, YB)
45 g / 135 m / 148 yards used for the sample
• 2 balls in Silver Fox (yarn C, YC)
80 g / 240 m / 263 yards used for the sample
Kremke Soul Wool Silky Kid (72% Mohair, 28% Silk; 210 m / 230 yards per 25 g ball)
• 1 ball in 57 grey (yarn D, YD)
18 g / 152 m / 166 yards used for the sample
Together with N13 I put kits (yarn, pattern and pin) together.
3.5 mm / US # 4 circular needle, or size to obtain gauge, at least 100 cm / 39” in length
24 sts x 48 rows = 10 cm / 4” in garter stitch using YA, after blocking
Row gauge is less important for this pattern.
- 16 stitch markers (at least one of them should be a locking stitch marker)
- tapestry needle
If you substitute yarns A-C, make sure, you use springy yarn. I don’t recommend pure or blends with silk or cotton.
If you don’t like to work with Kidsilk, you can also substitute it with a fingering weight yarn. Be aware that you need more yarn if you substitute YD with a fingering weight (around 60 g / 180 m / 197 yards).
I used solid colours. I would not recommend using variegated or speckled yarns. Only YC might work with speckles.
The higher the contrast (light - dark) between the colours the better. And remember, go bold!
As for YB, I chose the darkest colour or a colour of pop.
YD should be either the same colour as YA (for a calmer look) or as YC (for a stripier look).
It’s very helpful to use pointy needles for this technique and you should be familiar with the magic loop technique.
