Backnanger wool festival 2014 – impressions

The other weekend I went to the wool festival in Backnang. A german fibre festival and wool groupies occupied a small, traditional town. It was my first german wool festival and I want to share with you my impressions.

Backnang is a small town located north from Stuttgart (south of Germany) – or less than a three hour drive from Zurich. The picturesque old town consists of several half-timbered houses. The hillside town is lined at the bottom with the river Murr. Up on the hillside is the train station and behind that the school grounds.

On the site of the Waldorf school, the festival took place on Friday and Saturday. Outside, several tents were erected. In the school premises, courses were held and in the gym were other booths. A cafeteria with cakes and a Tarte booth provided the physical tasting.

A number of booths and demonstrations like spinning provided incentives and seduced wool junkies like me. Unfortunately the class for drop spindle spinning was fully booked. But Sandy from Lana Passion showed me how it works. So I bought rovings and a drop spindle made by her husband. So I will try my luck in spinning at home.

However, my yarn purchases held back a lot. Indeed, I had a guilty conscience. Because one day before my departure, three woolen packages arrived at my home. Bad timing to explain your boyfriend you drive the other day to a yarn festival…. OOPSIE!

My yarn orders arrived one day before the festival, from left to right: Nurturing Fibres Colours of the Month February, Romi Hill Pin & Lace Club 2014 April and Zauberwiese surprise bag multi-colored.

So I bought some notions: a needle case from DellaQ (by Zeenas Wollfühl-Oase) and cute stitch markers by Hiya Hiya.

At the festival I met a couple of women from the Zauberwiesen-meeting last year. It’s nice to see some familiar faces at an event like this. And also new acquaintances were made. Through the common hobby, it is easier to get into conversation. It was talked shop and exchanged tips and tricks.

On Saturday afternoon I put myself yarn-intoxicated in my car and drove home. On the way I looked down on my wrist and thought “I’m a wool-groupie!”. What are you doing to get wool … crazy!

What has been your craziest act to get wool? Wherever in the world have you already traveled for your wool addiction?
