The knitting pattern Pizol is a little piece of home and gives a warm, cosy feeling. Pizol is a warm, but light-weight triangle shawl. Perfect for a winter walk or a hike in the mountains.
Why Pizol? Pizol is the mountain where I learned to ski as a child, and today I hike there. It’s 2844 m high, in Sarganserland in the canton of St. Gallen (Switzerland). To the north, you have a wonderful view of two valleys: the Rhine valley and the Seeztal. So Pizol is a piece of home and comfort.
The triangular shawl is knitted from bottom up. You knit the border in a lace pattern with small cables. The middle part of the shawl is knitted with two different yarn weights held together to create a marled effect.
Pizol is not only an interesting knitting pattern to knit, you knit it also in less than 20 hours. The knitting pattern guides you step by step through the instructions.
Lana Rara Classic (57% sheep wool from rare breeds, 43% mulesing-free Merino wool; 270 m / 295 yards per 100 g)
• 2 skeins in Rauchblau (yarn A, YA)
166 g / 448 m / 490 yards used for the sample
Onion Knit Alpaca + Merino Wool + Nettles (30% Superfine Alpaca, 50% Fine Merino Wool, 20% Nettle Fibre; 175 m / 191 yards per 50 g)
• 2 balls in Braendt Orange (yarn B, YB)
100 g / 350 m / 382 yards used for the sample
I used two solid-coloured yarns.
6.5 mm / US #10.5 circular needle (80 cm / 32” in length), or size to obtain gauge
13 sts x 30 rows = 10 cm / 4” in garter stitch holding both yarns together, after blocking
13 sts x 30 rows = 10 cm / 4” in lace pattern with yarn A, after blocking
- tapestry needle
The instructions include advice for making a bigger or smaller shawl.
The Lana Rara yarn is a woolen spun yarn. It will fluff up when washed. If you want to substitute this yarn with a worsted spun yarn, I recommend using a thicker yarn.
Working with two yarns
The border is knitted with one yarn. The garter stitch section is worked with both yarns held together. When you switch from both yarns held together to just yarn A, make sure to drop yarn B to the wrong side.
- knit and purl
- increases and decreases
The pattern comes in written instructions.
